Mr. Righteous' Thoughts...

Coming down to the home stretch for Pan Alive... We asked our very own Mr. Righteous if he had anything to share with us before we head to battle tomorrow for Pan Alive... Here is what he had to say!

So you Come You Play yuh Pan
You find a man or woman in the band
You Jump around and you have your fun
Please doh leave as soon as the ting done
Cause boy it really really hard
To get all them pans back in the Yard
Yes, I to want to relax and Laugh, I want to Boast
And shout YEAH !!!! WE come FIRST !!!
But we can’t achieve that if people still skating through the last verse
So focus on the vision, have some foresight
Come early learn your part well keep your section tight

Now ah lil tired and press for time, so meh lyrics a bit off
But I got my heart in this, and Yo ! check me it aint SOFT !

But remember for us this ‘aint no show
It’s the last opportunity to get them notes you still don’t know
And call on the ancestors and invite them to DANCE!
Ah sure one or two ah them already know how to PALANCE
So Dance ! Dance ! even if you sad or if you having fun
DANCE MAN DANCE even if you the only one
Release all that pent up stress and frustration

"Afropan" - Mr. Righteous

AFROPAN

By: Mr. Righteous

I was telling my friends how I play with this Band
And the name of the band is Afropan
Afropan ??? Afropan??? Is that some kind of throw back band?
What instrument you play? And do you even have 1 fan?
Afropan!! Afropan !! You mean you never hear about Afropan
They have been around for more than 35 years my man
Started in the 70’s with Earl and them teaching students to play pan
And now today.. We still one of the best in the land
We have pannists of varying talents and skills
Some moved on, and some helped us surpass all expectation
Cause we the best playing steelband
In about 30 of the last 35 competition
If only Caribana will pay us our winnings on a timely occasion
Won’t have to come around begging for sponsorship or donations

A Percussion Instrument you thought!
LOOK !! LOOK !! Man don’t get me mad
Is the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century
And the birth place is the same as mine, sweet land called Trinidad
Our repertoire includes Calypso, Reggae, Religious and Classic
Whether is Earl or Andre, give them anything they could arrange it

So on Caribana when you see Afropan
Doh fraid come take a lil jump with we man
Release all your stress and frustration
Jumping up in what is known as the People’s SteelBand
If the music moves you, and you start to jump and wave you hand
And you find yourself jamming up on someone elses woman
Doh Worrrry! She husband go understand
Cause if you doh have one, he go put a drink in your hand
In celebration of you becoming a true fan
Experiencing the sweet music of steel pan
From the one and only …….
AFROPAN !!!

"Look Meh Band Coming" - Mr. Riteous

Look Meh Band Coming !

By Mr. Riteous

Afropan is MY BAND !!!
I could stand up a say that seriously as man
You see, I’m not just not another fan of the steelpan
Who show up cause I’m trini and I supposed to love pan.
I am St. Lucian, Antiguan, Grenadian, Cayman, Bajan even Jamacian
Forsaking cultural practices, sleep, food, boyfriend and even woman
Just for the sweet pleasures of caressing my melodious steelpan
Even though them damm hooks always cutting up meh hand.

This is My Band! I say, This is My Band!
To take this away from me, you might as well chop off both meh hand
Cause the way I treat she, and caress my Do Do Darling Afropan
Does even make my wife say, that I horning she with pan
So you can’t expect me to stand around and bury meh head in the sand
If I see anything, or anyone, threatening the stability of my band
You must really underestimate my love and commitment to pan
If you think for a moment I will turn my back and walk away in frustration

Me! I could think of nothing better I’d rather do
When you see I come straight from wuk in my nice dan dan and 2 dollar shoe
Just for the pleasure of showing some love to my darling Do Do
By pounding out a chromatic run or two
You see; The rhythms does touch parts of my soul that no woman can
Cause it’s the lil piece I was missing to complete me as a man
So now you know how I feel you just have to understand
I will always speak up in support of My Band.

Recently someone pulled me up, and pointed out to me
That all while I saying she is my band I will never see
That YOU treat her with the same love and respect that I have for she
So from now on instead of My Band I resolve to say WE
And I also resolve that WE will protect her by any means necessary
So come, lets embrace Afropan give her a good hug for me
She’s deserving of all our love because this is not my band anymore
She belongs to All Ah We !!
